Elected Officials – Running for Office

Previous to 2018, Regional District electoral area directors were elected for three-year terms. At the 2018 general local elections, all electoral area directors were elected to four-year terms of office.  Municipal directors are appointed to the Regional District Board at the pleasure of their respective councils.

Any Canadian citizen who is eligible to vote in the Province of BC is qualified to run for election as a director. Candidates do not need to own property in the area, however, they must have resided in BC for the last six months in order to qualify.

Elections

Starting in 2018 elections for electoral area director positions on regional boards will be held throughout the Province every fourth year on the third Saturday in October.

By-elections are held as necessary to fill vacancies occurring from time to time on the Board.

Referenda & Other Voting

Voting may occur with respect to bylaw approvals or the seeking of opinion by electors on a particular proposal.  Voting processes of this kind may be held at any time and may be restricted to a particular geographical area of the Regional District.

Alternate Approval Process (AAP)

For certain actions that require elector approval, local governments can use an alternate approval process instead of the voting process.  In this case the Regional District advertises its proposed action in local papers. If less than 10% of eligible electors do not register their opposition, the proposal may go ahead.  If 10% of the eligible electors oppose the proposal in the time period provided, the Regional District must obtain the assent of the electors by voting before it can proceed.

Mail Ballot Voting

Mail ballot voting is a process whereby qualified electors who would otherwise be unable to vote due to a physical disability, remoteness from a voting location, or absence from the Regional District during an election are permitted to cast a ballot without attending in person at a polling station. Please complete the Mail Ballot Application. For more information, please contact Edith Watson.
